3 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Social Media

Although I believe that everyone has the right to feel any way they wish about Social Media, here are a few pointers that I would like to make in terms of why they should ALL not only start liking Social Media but, most importantly, use it. Social Media is not just for the big brands but also for entrepreneurs, business owners and not for profits, big or small. There still are some small businesses that believe that Social Media is just a fad and not good for business. Here are my 3 reasons why businesses need to get in the Social Media space:

1. The percentage of people using Social Media is very high

This is not new knowledge, it has been talked about it since the inception of Facebook and Twitter, however, some people are still hesitant to start mostly because they are afraid that they are wasting time or, even better, social media will ruin their lives. Really? Newsflash, it is not social media that is ruining your life, it is your time management skills or getting started on social media without a plan. If you have a service or a product on the market you need to have a social media presence. Statistics show that Facebook alone has over 2 Billion users. Love it or hate it, Facebook is constantly pushing boundaries in the Social Networks spectrum becoming an integral part of online marketing while advancing in the development of social advertising.

2. If you are not on Social Media, your website alone will collect you cyber dust

When I hear business owners that they have a website and they do not need a Social Media presence I start laughing because a website’s ROI alone will only be cyber dust. Gone are the times when the saying “Build it and they shall come” stands true. With fierce competition and all the noise out there, a business will not stand a chance in becoming successful with a website alone. Even in the old days, a business owner had to use some form of strategy to make prospects aware of their business, even if it was just talking about it to their neighbours but they could not just build a store and expect it to be successful without talking about it. Today the opportunity to use technology to create brand awareness for your business through social media is the easiest and most effective way to generate leads. You may have paid someone thousands of dollars to build you the best-looking website, and your services may be top of the line with the opportunity to help many people but how would they find out about you if you do not share.

3. Social Media is a great way to raise awareness for your cause.

If you are involved in a not for profit corporation and want to raise awareness or advocate for the cause you are involved in, Social Media is a great channel to do so. The best thing about it is that it is very inexpensive and, in terms of advocacy, especially for issues that matter the most such as education, children and women’s issues, poverty, homelessness, issues pertaining to Aboriginal people and immigrants, it is imperative to realize that Social Media is a great avenue to raise awareness where an organization will get people talking. Even better, create change by raising funds and educating the public about those issues. Getting the public involved in your cause is the best use for Social Media as many people look for a cause to volunteer for to give back to the communities they live in to the causes that matter most to them. Engaging with their community is a Social Media win for all nonprofits! The most important thing to remember is to get started to be consistent and engage with your audience for optimal results!
